The Day I Dared!

(Saturday 26th June 1999)

It was with some trepidation that I agreed to join some of my friends at work on a sponsored abseil. Well, it was for a good cause - RNIB - and it's good to try something new.

There were 8 of us from Planit International. After registration we were fitted with a harness, hard hat and gloves and had a bit of training on the ground first. For most of us it was our first time. One of our friends who had done it before wanted to go down forwards so he was trained separately. We were then taken up in the lift. I felt ill in the lift although it may have been the heat. It was a really hot day. Once on the roof in the fresh air and enjoying the view I felt a little better. I found the hardest bit was actually getting on to the ledge and leaning back. Once in that position stepping back was not so much of a problem. We all had to pose for a photograph before going over the edge. It was a long way down and it seemed to take forever. It was advertised as 100ft but we are sure it was more than that. It is a 9 storey office block. One of the organisers waved to me out of a window on the way down. I made a point of looking down when I'd gone a little way and looking up when I got near the bottom. I was shaking when I got to the bottom.

Here's me posing in my T-shirt and my certificate for my madness.

I still can't believe I actually did it. I'll do it again one day - maybe.
